January 28th - February 1st

Whoa- that was so weird to type in February! I can't believe January has gone by so quickly!

This week is a lot more toned down in comparison to last week! Science Fair and Science Night were a BLAST! Thank you so much for helping your kiddos with their fantastic projects. An even bigger THANKS to Mrs. Schermerhorn for coordinating both events. She's a star!

Here is what our week will look like...

Reading
This is our last week looking at traditional literature. We will spend some time reviewing theme, character changes, and story mapping while reading examples of myths. Myths tend to be more difficult for kiddos since they have a higher vocabulary and a more complex plot. On Thursday we will take an assessment over traditional literature, theme, character changes, and story mapping. Students will be expected to read an example of traditional literature, determine which subcategory it belongs to, identify the theme while using text evidence to support their thinking, explain how a character has changed in the story, and map out the main events of the story. Since we have been working on all of these skills for the last few weeks, the assessment should be fairly easy!

Writing
We are staring a new piece that will be due on Friday. We are going to review adding satisfying endings to our stories. Students are having a hard time making their endings flow from the rest of the story. The prompt this week is: Write about a time you helped someone.

Science
In science we are continuing to look at weathering, erosion, and deposition. Most students have a hard time differentiating between weathering and erosion. I found a bunch a great links for kiddos to practice at home with. They are posted on our resource page!

Math
This week we are reviewing fractions and decimals in word problem format. Students will have a math assessment on Thursday! Students will be expected to compare fractions, order fractions and decimals, find the corresponding fraction for a decimal amount and vice versa, and model fractions greater than one. We had a BIG breakthrough with decimals last week!

Texas History
Last week we talked about the Texas Revolution. Students wrote summaries of the main events in the revolution. They turned those summaries into a book on the Texas Revolution! We should be done with out books no later than Friday!

Fourth Grade
-I will be out on Monday for the second half of a fantastic STAAR writing training that Ms. Stowe has so wonderfully allowed me to attend.
-All extra credit homework assignments from last week are due on Monday.
As always-let me know if you have any questions!
