Funny Story

There was  A LOT going on in fourth grade last week. It's hard for me to pick my favorite moment, but this one definitely makes its way to the top...

Here is a picture I took of a student's writing during Writing University. We were discussing thought shots, how we use them, where we've seen them before, and writing examples in our journals. This is an example of a flash forward that he wrote...

Sound familiar?

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the road less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
-Robert Frost

I couldn't believe it. This kiddo was able to understand an idea that most adults tend to forget. Life is so much more exciting when we step into the unknown and challenge ourselves.

His writing reminded me of a video Ms. Stow and Mrs. Bailey  played for us at our last Wednesday meeting. The video is titled Pep Talk and included an important message almost all of us were in need of. This time of year is stressful and hectic for students, parents, and teachers BUT we're all in it together. Adventures are even better when you've got your friend by your side.

I pulled the video up and played it for the class. They loved it! Everyone was so impressed at how our classmate and Robert Frost seemed to come to the same conclusion. We talked about what it means to 'take the road less traveled,' and that it doesn't necessarily guarantee a life full of rainbows and butterflies. I think Kid President said it best, "There were rocks, thorns, glass! It hurt, man!"
When I asked the kiddos if they thought it would be worth it they all agreed-yes.
