Writing
Last week, we got started on a new writing piece. I have seen a HUGE difference between their writing this week and their published pieces that went home on Thursday. It's great to see that they are growing as writer's so early in the year! This week, we are going to practice writing 'hooks,' satisfying endings, and adding sensory details to our stories. These are all skills we will continue to work on throughout the year.
Reading
Last week, we read one of my favorite children's books, Pete and Pickles by Berekeley Breathed. We spent time analyzing the characters, their interactions, and how the main character changes throughout the story. We practiced our inferencing skills as we used our schema and text evidence to really understand Pickles, the main character. There was a whole hidden story you had to search the text and pictures to find! We learned a lot!
Math
Our math test was on Tuesday of last week. Because of the performance on the assessment, we decided to spend the rest of the week revisiting some of the skills we had been learning. This week, we are moving on to multiplication strategies. We will look at ways students can come up with products when they can't recall the answer. We will also talk about ways to represent multiplication problems through repeated addition, arrays, grouping, and other strategies.
Science
This week, we will continue to look at properties of matter. We will spend all day on Wednesday conducting science experiments! Students will have the chance to rotate around the classrooms and learn about properties of matter with each fourth grade teacher. It's going to be a lot of fun!
Texas History
This week we will focus our attention to Texas climate, plants, and animals. We will talk about the size of Texas and how these three things can be so different inside of one state.
