This week is International Children's Week AND Book Fair!! It's like our very own Elsa England holiday!
We are going to have so much fun researching our country, South Korea. We are fortunate enough to have two Korean students in our classroom who are a wealth of knowledge. We also have some parents who have graciously volunteered to teach our students about the Korean culture. The kiddos are really looking forward to learning more about their classmates' culture!
Language Arts & Social Studies
Last week, we wrapped up our poetry unit. The kiddos learned so much about inferring meanings in poetry, different styles of poetry, and even wrote a poetry book of their own. This week, we are shifting gears and focusing on research, which is handy since we want to spend lots of time researching South Korea! Students will practice differentiating between reliable and non-reliable resources, rewriting information in their own words to prevent plagiarism, citing their resources, and discovering different ways to present their research.
Science
Speaking of research, this week in science we are going to start our Science Fair research paper in class. I know that I originally said we would get it done next week, but I want to give the kiddos plenty of time to create quality work. We will use our research skills from language arts to help us type up a research paper on Google Drive and find our ten vocabulary words. We will also fit in the remainder of our electricity unit by creating an electromagnet.
Math
The kiddos really rocked it last week with 2x2 digit multiplication and division. While they would still benefit from some continued practice, they worked really hard to get the algorithm down. This week and next, we are going to look at fractions. Students will be able to compare fractions, order fractions on a number line, write proper and improper fractions, model fractions greater than one, and look at different ways to model the same number. It sounds like a lot to fit in, but they did a great job today in class! We already started ordering fractions on a number line!
Homework
Students will NOT have language arts homework this week. I encouraged students to use this extra time to work on their November writing assignments instead. Hopefully, they will be able to go into Thanksgiving Break with their science and writing assignments completed!
