I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the PERFECT weather we had this weekend. I lounged around outside with a new book. Is there anything better?
Last week was quite calm, and this week should be fairly easy going, but things are going to kick back up right before Spring Break. We are in desperate need of volunteers to help decorate our classroom for Camp STAARlight. I know that it falls at quite an inconvenient time, but the kiddos will truly appreciate all your hard work when they come in the following Monday!

Here is what our week will look like:
WritingThis week, we are going to switch gears and revisit writing expository pieces. I have seen so much growth in their personal narratives lately, but I don't want them to lose their touch with expository writing. We will work through each phase as a class, setting specific goals every day. It should be a nice refresher right before Camp! Last week, they worked really hard at mastering comma rules. We aren't 100% there yet, but I am already seeing them use them appropriately in their writing, and noticing it in our reading. Yay!
Reading
Last week, we wrapped up our drama unit. The kiddos had a lot of fun getting to know the characters and practicing their reader's theatre scripts. This week, we will start a unit on non-fiction text. We will read about a variety of interesting topics (the Olympics, and this crazy weather we've been having) and consider what was the author's purpose for writing. We want kiddos to dig deeper than "to inform me." What message is the author really trying to get across? What, specifically, does he want you to know, do, or care about?
Math
We are having a little bit of a hard time with conversion and estimating reasonable units for capacity. This isn't uncommon since measurement can be an abstract concept for kiddos. We will continue to practice using our conversion chart and look at real life examples of capacity. Students may bring in empty containers (no gallons please) to help us gain a better idea of what these units look like in the real world.
Science
This week, we will play catch up on our weather calendar, finish our weather broadcasts, and learn about how clouds form and what role they play in predicting the weather. Last week, we talked about how clouds get their names based off their form and height in the atmosphere. This week, we will look at how they are formed and what they tell us about the weather in our area.
Texas History
The Texans have started a revolution, but do they have the man power to back it up? General Sam Houston is going to have a tough time defeating Santa Anna and the 5,000 men he has marching all the way from Mexico! Things don't look good for the few men posted in San Antonio at the Alamo.
