Weekly Update 2/9-13

Good Afternoon!

The kiddos are currently hard at work on a writing benchmark - woohoo!
You can use this link to see what their benchmark looks like. Scroll down to the 2013 4th Grade Writing test.

Fourth Grade 411
-Tomorrow is Picture Day
-Please turn in your field trip forms as soon as possible
-Friday is our Valentine's Day PaRtY! We have a new student today. Please be sure to add Ishani to your list of valentines.

Reading
We are going to review differentiating between facts and opinions in nonfiction text. Students will also look at ways we support opinions using facts. We are going to shuffle through the Austin American Statesman, Scholastic News, and a few online news sources.

Writing
We are going to look over the benchmark together this week. We will talk about areas of strength and weakness. Scores will not go home until later in the month. I am sending home a writing piece from a few weeks ago that is not graded. They were not great overall, so we decided to discuss them in class instead. Their pieces the following week were much better! Don't forget your new spelling words for the week. There is also an extra credit writing opportunity. This would be a great chance to see what your child can do!

Math
We are going to spend another day reviewing converting units of time. Then, we will move on to converting units of capacity. Students need to be able to organize their conversions in a chart.

Science
We are looking at different forms of energy. Students will be able to differentiate between sound, light, mechanical, thermal, kinetic, and potential energy. We will also spend a day reviewing magnetism.

Texas History
Mexico has the Independence Bug! They are going to fight for their freedom from Spain. How will this affect Texas?
