Weekly Update

Good Afternoon

Thank goodness our last round of STAAR testing is finally here. Students will take the math assessment on Tuesday and the reading assessment on Wednesday. Please make sure your child arrives to school no later than 7:40. Don't forget to pack a healthy snack!

Here is what our week will look like...

Language Arts, Math & PBL
This week we are going to research conservation facts to help us write our persuasive letter to the district. We will use the data from our findings to help support our idea that district assessments should be on the computer in order to conserve our natural resources. Students will use reading comprehension skills to help them decode new words, summarize important information, and establish a purpose for reading. We will also look at persuasive techniques to help us craft our persuasive letter. Finally, we will use our financial literacy skills to help us determine what technology can be purchased with the money the district will save by moving our benchmarks to the computer.

Science
We have had a lot of fun learning about animals that interact in different ecosystems. This week students will pick an ecosystem, design a food web, and create an online presentation of their ecosystem. First, they will use Google Drawings to create their food web. Next, students will learn how to use Gimp, a free photo editing resource, to help them create their ecosystem. Finally they will then add information about the organisms in the ecosystem using Thing Link. Here is a quick example I made this afternoon.
