Weekly Update 5/4-7

Good Evening!

I have had a BLAST watching all of your video homework assignments from last week. A BIG thanks to parents who helped film/upload/star in our videos. Your help is always appreciated.

Here is a look at our week ahead...

Paper Project
(language arts & social studies)

The kiddos made GREAT strides last week. They decided that they want to attempt to give two presentations to persuade district leaders to finish printing district assessments on paper. The first presentation will be in class on Thursday, May 21. Students will invite district leaders to the presentation. They would also like to present at the next school board meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 pm. Please keep this date in your calendar while I work on firming up the details.

This week students are going to create the visual portions of their project. Groups will use their knowledge of persuasive techniques to influence their audience to reduce paper usage. They already have great ideas for using videos, student interviews, infographics, and images to help their arguments.

On Monday we are going to Google Hangout with Mrs. Bailey, principal at Caraway Elementary. The students have developed a list of questions about the access her students have to technology. We hope to use her interview as part of our persuasive argument.

Money Matters
(math)

Last week we introduced our financial literacy project to the students. It was a hit! I even heard one kiddo say, "This is the best math class ever!" Who knew saving could be so exciting? Our driving question is: How can we prepare for our financial futures? We started by making a list of things that we know will be in our financial futures. From there, students narrowed down their lists to one thing they would like to begin saving for. Students also predicted how much they think their item costs. That was my favorite part :)

This week we will research the price of the items students want to eventually be able to afford. We will use that data to calculate how much they will have to save over the next few years. Students will use those numbers to help them come up with a reasonable allowance they think they should earn.

Don't forget to open up your savings accounts! I would LOVE to see pictures of your trips to the bank.

Amazing Adaptations
(science)

Last week we learned a lot about owls and their amazing adaptations. This week we will learn about how/why animals have adaptations. We will talk about the difference between behavioral and physical adaptations. Did you know that plants have adaptations too? On Wednesday we will have different plants to observe and discuss how their adaptations help the plants survive.
