Oh. My. Goodness.
What a whirlwind week! I have had so much funny getting to know all of your lovely kiddos. We spent most of our week doing team-building activities, learning classroom routines, getting to know each other, and getting used to our Chromebooks. You can checkout pictures from our week in eBackpack.
As much fun as that was, it's time for us to settle in to some routines. The only routine we will NOT start this week is homework. Our planners have not arrived yet, and I would rather set up all home-to-school systems at once instead of at multiple times. Hopefully they will arrive this week!
Here is what our week will look like....
Language Arts
This week students will work in partners reading fiction and nonfiction text. They will use their partner to talk about, and practice creating, quality reading response. We will read Scholastic News (nonfiction) and their independent books (usually fiction). They will answer questions about both text. At the end of the week, students will create a short video reviewing their independent book. We will watch these videos in class on Friday! Hopefully they will introduce each other to new and interesting stories! While students are working on their responses, I will be assessing students reading levels. I will share this information with you during our fall conference. More information is to come.
Math
We will start our week off with a math presassessment. This will allow me to see what skills students have retained over the summer. We will check over it in class. This assessment will NOT go in the gradebook. It is purely for me to understand where each child is at. At the end of the week, we will review problem solving strategies and tips. Students will work in partners to solve multi-step problems in their math notebooks.
Science
Science is always a popular subject, so we are jumping right in with our first experiment! We will discover the properties of different soils and their abilities to support plant growth. But before we get started with that, we will talk about the importance of lab safety and making smart choices when handling science equipment. Students will also research different types of scientists to see what sort of career might interest them!
Social Studies
We will spend this week continuing to work on team building. We will start Texas history next week! Here's a fun fact: Did you know Bluebell will be back on the shelves tomorrow morning!?
Homework
Homework will start next week. One battle at a time, y'all!
