Weekly Update 9/28-10/2

Good Evening!

I hope many of you enjoyed the super blood moon lunar eclipse last night! Don't forget to turn in your extra credit on Google Classroom. It is due on Wednesday.

We have A LOT going on this week. Please be sure to read all the way through! There are lots of helpful resources and there is information on our homework this week.

A look at the week...

Reading
This week we will start a new unit on nonfiction text. We will discuss ways writers organize text differently than fiction text. Today we discussed nonfiction text features and how they help readers with their comprehension, and writers share their information on a logical format. There will be a quiz on Friday over the different text features. Students can use this Quizlet to help them prepare for the assessment.

Writing
We are also switching topics this week in writing. We are now going to focus on expository writing. We will circle back around to personal narrative writing later in the year - no worries! This week we will mostly focus on the difference between expository text and personal narratives. It is very important that students are able to write the two different genres without 'crossing over' into the opposite style of writing.

We do have new spelling words this week. Students will not take their assessment until next Friday, 10/9. I will be out two days next week, so I thought we would keep the same unit for a little bit longer. I also made Quizlets (Quizlets for everything!!) to help the kiddos study. Here are the links for the antonyms and lesson four.

Math
We are starting another new unit in math this week. Students will review how to multiply 2x1 digit problems, learn how to solve 2x2 digit problems, and use long division. We've got A LOT going on the next few weeks in math. Please, please, please, please, please make sure you are practicing math facts every night with your kiddo. It is imperative that students have their facts memorized so that they can be successful in this unit, and many more units to come. Math facts are a foundation that most fourth grade math concepts are built upon. Please make sure you are making this a priority at home!

Science
We are going to wrap up our unit on weathering, erosion, and deposition. Your child should be able to tell you how these three things can change the shape of Earth's surface.

Social Studies
Students are going to learn about the four natural regions of Texas. In groups, they will plan a trip for a family of four to their designated region. Click here for more information on our project.

Homework
We are going to mix things up for our homework. I am going to give the kiddos several assignments that they will need to complete over the next two weeks. Let me know how it goes. I'm not one for an overload of homework, but I know that many of you have been asking for extra practice. Maybe the two week timeline and the additional activities will be a happy medium? We will have several assignments where students will need access to their Google accounts. We are a Next Gen classroom and access to the internet is important!

I know it looks like a lot but I PROMISE it's A LOT easier than it sounds.

Language Arts
-Spend some time practicing your grammar skills using IXL Language Arts. Back it on up to the third grade skills if you're having trouble. This is a great resource to prepare for STAAR without having to do a bunch of worksheets!
-Finish your spelling packet and practice your words on Antonyms Quizlet / Lesson Four Quizlet.

Math
-Practice yo math facts! Use any of these links to help you be successful. Please share any resources you use at home that you enjoy. I'l be happy to share them with the class. Parents, please initial your child's agenda every night (just for the next two weeks:) to let me know if they practiced their math facts. Please do not sign your child's agenda if they did not complete their work. Also, take some time to look over our agenda and how we use it. Kiddos should be responsible for keeping up with all due dates and assignments.                (20 minutes a day)

Science
There are seven assignments students need to complete on STEMscopes. This is much less time consuming than it sounds. Three of the assignments are videos, two are games, one is a short quiz, and one is a reading passage. Please make sure and have your child show you their work while completing these assignments. There is a history of rushing and not doing so well overall :) All students should access STEMscopes from the England webpage. They all know how to log in and complete their work.

Social Studies
Please spend time working with your kiddo to do some research on places to vacation in their region. You do NOT need to help them create their plan. We will do all of that in class. All they need to do at home is look up places that showcase the culture of the region. They will narrow down all ideas and use their budget here at school with their partners. Click here for more information on the project.
