Weekly Update 10/12-16

Good Morning!!

I've got lots of information to share with you about STAAR and homework. Please make sure you read all the way through. Let me know if you have any questions!

Reading
This week, we are going to continue reading nonfiction. We will focus on strategies we use to help us determine the meanings of unfamiliar words. You can look over the chart in our eBackpack to see what we will discuss. Feel free to use these strategies at home when you're reading with your child!

Writing
We are going to continue working on expository writing. Right now we are focusing on getting through our prewriting stages and selecting quality supporting ideas. You can watch the videos I prepare for the kiddos in our eBackpack. They are a little long and silly. This was my first time creating a video lesson for the kiddos to watch while I was absent!

Math
We are going to bring 2x2 digit multiplication to an end. This skill is something we will continue to practice in our spiral reviews and problem solving. Please make sure you are working with your child on their math facts. Our next topic is division!!

Science
We are also bringing our forces, weathering, erosion, and deposition unit to a close. Please make sure your child spends time reviewing these terms with our Quizlet. Next week will start an awesome unit on weather! Hopefully we will have some cold fronts moving in to model the topics we will discuss in class.

Social Studies
This will be the last week of our regions project. Today, Mr. Weiler is teaching a lesson to the kiddos on how to create a map using Google Maps. The kiddos will map out their itineraries for their final presentations.

Homework
I got lots of positive feedback from our two weeks of homework - so we're doing it again! You can find digital copies of all homework files in our eBackpack. The only thing I could NOT scan was the spelling homework. Students can ask me for extra copies if they accidentally lose their spelling work. Please take a minute to read over all of the changes to the homework. We trimmed down the science expectations, added a simple reading log, and included some math practice. Let me know if you have any questions!!

We do have an optional extra credit assignment that can be found in our eBackpack. This assignment is only for my language arts students.

Writing STAAR Updates
Good news! Writing STAAR has been condensed to only one day! Students will be required to answer multiple choice editing and revising questions. They will also need to write an expository writing piece. Here is the information TEA released last week. I will be attending an expository writing training on Friday!
