Weekly Update 2/1-5

Hello!

What a beautiful weekend! I hope everyone had time to get outside and enjoy the weather. I know I wouldn't mind a short winter and a longer spring. Bring on the sunshine!

**There is a lot of information this week. Please be sure to read all the way through!**

Here is a look at our week:

Reading
We are going to continue to learn about nonfiction text through reading about hunger in our community. Last week, we read an interesting article on hunger put together by National Geographic. I highly encourage you to read it and discuss what you learned with your family.

Writing
Last week, the kiddos took a practice writing STAAR assessment. I will send their scores and writing samples home soon. You can access the STAAR scoring guide for more insight into your child's writing score. You can also find the released test and answer key online. In the mean time, we are going to continue working on expository writing by making changes to our pieces from last week.

Math
We are starting a new unit on angles and angle measurement. This week, we will discuss the difference between acute, right, and obtuse angles. It's very important that students be able to tell the difference. We will also begin measuring angles using a protractor!

Science
This is our last week discussing renewable and nonrenewable resources. Here's some food for thought: If we consider food to be a renewable resources, then why are so many people hungry?

Texas History
We are going to talk about our city's namesake, Stephen F. Austin! We will look at ways he makes changes that will impact Texas for years to come!

Homework
Don't forget to turn in homework on Friday! We will also have spelling assessments on Friday.

Fourth Grade 411
This is our final week for participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring. We currently have less than 400 cans of food that has been donated. That's no where NEAR our goal of 2,000 food items. In order to boost participation, all fourth grade classes are in a competition to bring in the most items. The winning class will get a top secret surprise! I could be persuaded to do something extra exciting if we blow all the other classes out of the water - so get those items in NOW!

I have uploaded grades to our online gradebook. They are all the ones that were sent home last week, so there shouldn't be any surprises. I'm still working on adding several more grades before progress reports go out two weeks from now. You should see a few more in your Thursday folder this week!
