October 22-26

We have had such a busy and productive day today!
Here is the rundown for this week.

Language Arts
This week we are wrapping up our procedural text unit. We have been working on how-to writing, using quality transitions, and prepositions. Today we talked about Angry Birds and how it relates to the different parts of speech. It was a lot of fun! Students will write a final how-to piece that will be due on Friday. We also have a district writing assessment tomorrow. The students will write a practice STAAR personal narrative. We will use this personal narrative as a reflection piece. What areas are we great at? What areas do we need some help with? Students have already written personal narratives this year. We still have a long way to go, but I am so fortunate to have a class full of natural writers!

We spent some time this morning talking about spelling. Students looked over their spelling homework grade from last week and how they earned their score. We clarified some expectations and reviewed the grading scale (each day is worth 25 pts).

Math
In math we are talking about elapsed time and temperature. Today we estimated the temperatures inside the building and outside the building. Since it was so humid this morning it was a great time to talk about how humidity can effect the 'feels like' temperature. A lot of kiddos were surprised how far off their estimate was! We will continue to collect temperature data all week.
We also started talking about elapsed time. We read a class favorite, Scaredy Squirrel, and used our time-telling abilities to see how Scaredy Squirrel spends his time during the day. This is a skill that students generally struggle with. Please be sure to check over your child's homework  this week as they might need some extra support.

Science
We wrapped up our matter unit and are now moving on to forces and energy. The kiddos already have a strong background in recognizing different forms of energy. We are going to learn about a new one this week! We also started a lab that Coach DiCarlo set up for us. It shows students just how long they would have to exercise to burn off their meal choices. Check out the resources page for some fun dance moves. Dancing is a great way to work off those Taco Bell calories!

Texas History
I must say that I am so IMPRESSED with the awesome projects that the kiddos worked so hard on last week! We put them out in the neighborhood area for everyone to see. We will spend a little time everyday this week on presentations. We are also going to push forward and start talking about explorers coming over to America. It's going to be a great time!
