Weekly Update 8/3-6

We are getting into a regular school routine this week. Here is what we are going to work on in each subject:

Reading & Writing
This week, we are setting up our reading and writing workshops. Workshop consists of three main parts: a mini lesson, time for independent practice, then a few minutes to share what students worked on. This format allows plenty of time for students to work on their skills and for the teacher to meet with small groups or one-on-one with students. We will talk about expectations of students and the teacher during this time.

In writing, we will also get started on personal narratives, practice generating writing ideas, and create a plan for starting our stories.

In reading, we will look at appropriate and thoughtful ways to respond to our text.

Science
In science, we will review appropriate behavior in the science lab and during outdoor investigations. We will practice using triple beam balances, microscopes, beakers, graduated cylinders, spring scales, and our lab safety wear. We will talk about what scientists do, how they record their findings, and who are some famous scientists.

Texas History
Map skills are the name of the game this week. We will discuss the difference between regions, states, countries, continents, and hemispheres. We will look at different kinds of maps: What do they have in common, what is different? Why are maps important?

Math
Place value, place value, place value. Students have been working on place value since they've been in school but it's something they tend to struggle with. We will extend the place value system up to the billions place, compare large numbers, and look for patterns on a number line.

Fourth Grade 411
Please remember to sign your child's agenda every night. I use this as a form of nightly communication between school and home. I use hearts to represent compliments and tally marks to represent misbehavior. I'll share more on this at Parent Night. Students are also starting their nightly reading log this week.

Don't forget to check out our calendar for upcoming events!!

As always, let me know if you have any questions.

It's going to be a great week!
