Good Afternoon!
I hope everyone had a great second week back at school. I think there is still some adjusting going on. Not everyone has their school brains turned on. It's hard to be in school mode when it's so hot outside!
This is what our week will look like:
Reading
Last week we spent a lot of time setting up our reading workshop and talking about expectations for reading responses. This week in reading workshop we are going to focus our attention to the characters in our books. We will discuss the ways that they change throughout the story, what causes those changes, and how characters interact and have an impact on one another. We will read Pete and Pickles by one of my favorite authors, Berkeley Breathed.
Writing
Now that we have our writing workshop expectations in place and have started working on our first stories, we are going to spend some time talking about the editing and revising process. Revising tends to be something students dread and see as a negative thing. We will talk about how revising should be seen as a compliment. We toss out poor writing and revise great writing to make it even better!

Math
Last week we reviewed place value and extended our thinking all the way to the hundred billions place! We also reviewed subtraction across zeros (something they struggle with even today) and introduced multiplying by 10s and 100s. We will continue to learn about these concepts in preparation for our first math test next Monday.
Science
In science we are going to start our unit on states of matter and their properties. We will start off by reviewing the different states of matter and how their particles are different depending on the state the matter is in. We will also talk about how the addition/subtraction of heat is what causes matter to change state.
Texas History
We are going to wrap up our unit on map skills this week. Students will be required to apply their knowledge when they create a map of their own. I'm excited to see what they come up with!
