Weekly Update 9/30 - 10/4

We've got another busy week ahead!

Reading
We are going to continue building on our inferencing abilities, work on inferencing theme, and talking about character traits. We are going to introduce figurative language with a focus on similes and metaphors. We will look at ways authors use these to help create an image in the reader's mind.

Writing
This week we are still looking at writing hooks and satisfying endings. As I looked over their writing from last week, I noticed that many students weren't applying these strategies to their writing or were only using some. We will continue to work on this skill this week. We are also going to practice using similes and metaphors in our writing pieces to help add detail. Students will turn in a final draft on Friday. They will be responsible for having a hook, satisfying ending, similes and metaphors, changes based off our conferences, paragraphs, punctuation, and capitalization.

Science
Last week, we spent a lot of time working on science labs and properties of matter. We will continue our conversations this week. Students will pick an object and describe all of its properties, including: mass, volume, sink or float, texture, magnetic, and length.

Texas History
This week, we are going to continue learning about Texas weather and wildlife. We will also briefly introduce regions and how they can be defined.

Math
We will have a math test next Monday over our current unit. Students will have a study guide they can work on to help them prepare. Please be on the lookout for this. This week, we are continuing with our multiplication strategies and talking about division.
