We have an exciting week planned!
Last week, students wrapped up our personal narrative unit. They learned all about writing interesting hooks, satisfying endings, using similes and metaphors to create pictures with their words, and focusing their writing on a short moment in time. This week, we are going to turn a complete one-eighty and start a new unit on expository writing. We will spend most of this week looking at examples and comparing them to personal narratives. How are they different? Would I use the same strategies for personal narratives in my expository writing? How do I get started on writing an expository piece? I suggested to students that they work on their night write personal narratives first, before they begin their expository piece. This way they will have plenty of experience working on expository pieces before they begin their assignment.
Reading
We also wrapped up our fiction unit last week, where we looked at making inferences, cause and effect in the plot, character changes and interactions, and inferring theme. These are all skills we will continue to build on during the year. On Monday, we are going to start a new unit focusing on non-fiction text. We will look at how non-fiction text is organized and analyzing non-fiction text features. Why are some words in bold type? What does the heading of an article tell me? Why should I read captions?
Math
On Monday, we will have our second math test of the year. It will focus mainly on multiplication strategies. Don't forget to turn in the bonus/review packet on Monday. We will review the assessment in class on Tuesday and continue working on division strategies for the rest of the week.
Science
Last week, students observed and measured the physical properties of items found in our classroom. We used a graduated cylinder to find volume, a triple beam balance to measure and compare mass, and dropped out items into water to determine if it would sink or float. This week, we are going to talk about mixtures and solutions. Can we separate solutions? What materials are soluble? How are mixtures and solutions different?
Texas History
It's finally here! We are going to visit the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum on Thursday! Before we go, students will be assigned a project on the Texas Regions. They will look for information for the project as well as complete a scavenger hunt while at the museum.
