Weekly Update 10/14-18

This week is a lot more relaxed in comparison to last week.
Check out what we've got going on...

Writing
Last week we spent some time introducing expository writing. We compared personal narratives and expository text to find ways that they are a like and different. This week we are going to start working on our first expository piece. We will practice generating writing ideas, defining the topic of our writing with a central idea statement, and use a graphic organizer to outline our writing. I'll post a copy of the graphic organizer in our eBackpack.

Reading
Last week we also started reading nonfiction text. We practiced summarizing nonfiction articles that we read in our issues of Time for Kids. This week we are going to practice reading for information as we read nonfiction text about the four regions of Texas. We will continue to look at the way nonfiction text is organized, practice distinguishing between facts and opinions in nonfiction, and determine the author's purpose for writing nonfiction text.

Math
This week we will start a new unit on input and output tables. Students will be given a set of data and they must determine the relationship between both sides of the table. Students will use multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition skills as they write algebraic equations for each data table.

Science
We are continuing our unit on matter this week. Students will take an assessment on Friday over states of matter, properties of matter, mixtures and solutions, and changes in properties of matter.

Texas History
We are starting our Texas Regions project this week. Students will come up with a way to increase tourism in their designated region. It should be a lot of fun!
