Homework
There has been some confusion about the expectations for reading homework. Each week, I change up the requirements to help support what we are working on in the classroom. I have the students write down the expectations on their homework and I remind them every morning when I check their agenda and homework. This week, they are going to continue practicing their summarizing skills. They need to keep their summaries short and focused on the main idea of their reading. They do not need to tell me everything that happened in the book.
This week, we are starting back up with fourth grade math skills in our homework packets. We feel students are now adequately prepared to take on this task. Let me know how it goes!
Language Arts
We are moving forward with our poetry unit this week. Last week, we read a wide variety of poetry, made lists of common topics, made lists of topics we would like to write about, talked about things we noticed about poetry, identified different speakers, and talked about digging deep to discover true meanings in poetry. Each day this week, students will learn about a new style of poetry. We will read examples and try writing our own. We will also look at figurative language and talk about how writers use it in their writing. We will apply figurative language to our own poetry.
Math
We have a math test on Tuesday, for sure. The kiddos didn't feel ready to take an assessment on Friday so we pushed the date back. Our assessment will cover elapsed time, interpreting data, and input/output tables. We will review all day in class. Students can prepare at home using the links on my website. There will not be extra credit provided for this assessment. On Wednesday, we will start a new unit reviewing multiplication and extending it to 2x1 and 2x2 digit multiplication. We will also continue working on our division skills and making combinations.
Science
This week, we are continuing to look at different forms of energy and how it can change. We will then narrow our focus on to electrical energy and how it travels in closed paths. Students will attempt to power motors and light bulbs by completing a closed path for electricity.
Texas History
We are still learning about the Native Americans that lived in Texas long ago. At the end of the week, students will pick a tribe and write a personal narrative from the perspective of a young child living in that tribe. These writing assignments will be due on Friday.
Fourth Grade 411
