Weekly Update 9/2-5

Here is a look at our week...

Math
Students will take a preassessment to help me identify strengths/areas of growth for each kiddo. We will also start practicing math routines such as: nightly math homework, getting ready for math when returning from recess, practicing multiplication facts and graphing our progress, and how to do the math warm-up.
Our first math unit covers multiplication and division relationships and strategies. If your child does not have their multiplication facts memorized, they should spend time every night practicing them. In fourth grade, we are building on top of students' multiplication knowledge. If they do not know their facts now, they will struggle as we progress through the year.

Language Arts
This week, we will introduce reading and writing workshops. Students will learn the routines of workshop and their responsibilities during each part of the morning. We will also review what quality work looks like when they are working on their individual responses.

Science
On Tuesday, we will look over science journals that belong to real life scientists. We will discuss why it is important to keep our notebooks organized and easy to read. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will review science tools and safety in science labs. On Friday, we will learn about different science career opportunities. Students will get to create a lab coat with their name and the type of scientist they would like to be!

Homework
Students will have homework this week - yay!

There is a blue reading log that students need to keep up with every night. I will check it during the week, but they do not have to turn it in for a grade until the end of the month. It is important that they keep these in their binders and do not lose them.

At the beginning of each week, students will be given a math homework packet. Students should complete one page per evening. We will check the page as a class every day. The whole packet will be turned in for a grade on Fridays, which will allow you some wiggle room during the week.

Agendas should be signed by parents every evening. I use the agendas to communicate lots of information during the week. Please do NOT take on this responsibility for your child. It is their job to remember to ask you to look over it. Please do not take it out of their backpacks to sign if they did not remember to ask you. There might be a learning curve for some, but in the end we want our students to be responsible for their assignments.
