Weekly Update 9/28 - 10/3

Good Morning!

Here is a look at our week ahead.

Reading
This week, we are going to start a new unit in nonfiction. We will talk about different ways authors organize nonfiction information and why they may use those different text structures. We have lots of nonfiction books in our room from the library. The books cover many topics, including information from our new science unit!

Writing
We are so fortunate that our lovely librarian, Mrs. Kupersztoch, scheduled a writing camp with award winning author, Phil Bildner, on Wednesday! Students will get a chance to hear about writing tips and tricks that real authors use! And, not only are we starting a new unit in reading, but we are also starting a new unit in writing. Students will practice writing expository pieces on topics that are interesting to them. They will practice clearly communicating their thoughts and ideas. We will also discuss the difference between personal narrative and expository writing.

Math
We are going to continue on with our unit on fractions. Students will learn what a mixed number is and how to find it's equivalent improper fraction. We will also look at how to find common denominators for different fractions. Don't forget to use Khan Academy for extra support or extension at home!

Science
On Monday, we will review for our assessment on Tuesday. On Wednesday, students will be assigned a month-long, at-home assignment. Just like their reading logs, they will be required to record the nightly moon phase and daily temperature. Students may have very limited background knowledge on this topic and that's okay. We will cover all important information as we continue this unit. We will spend Thursday and Friday learning about how scientists are able to predict the weather and how they share this information with the public.

Texas History
Last week, students started creating a map for their very own island. This assignment will be due on Tuesday. We will spend the rest of the week looking at the natural regions of Texas and the type of wildlife and plants that live there. We will also talk about the difference between weather and climate and how we would categorize the kind of weather/climate we have here in Texas.

Homework
- Don't forget that all reading logs are due on Wednesday.
- Spelling homework will start going home next week!
- An extra credit writing assignment will go home on Wednesday. This assignment will be due at the end of the month. Students may bring in drafts for me to make notes on during the month
