Weekly Update 10/13-17

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone enjoys their extra day off.
The staff at Elsa England will be in a Project Based Learning training all day on Monday. All the fourth grade teachers will be working on our upcoming PBL project!

Here is a look at the week ahead...

WritingLast week, students completed their first expository piece. We talked about ways to generate writing ideas, how to organize our thoughts, and the difference between a personal narrative and expository writing. This week, students will get the chance to write ANOTHER expository piece. We will use a new graphic organizer to help them plan their writing, continue to practice generating writing ideas, review the difference between personal narratives and expository writing, and practice writing quality introductions and conclusions.

Reading
We spent some time reviewing nonfiction text features last week. We also started looking at ways authors organize their nonfiction text. This week, we will spend time reading nonfiction text everyday and determine the text structure the author used, practice identifying text evidence to support our thinking, and talk about why the author chose to use that organizational strategy.

Math
We will have a test over fractions and decimals on Friday.
Students need to be able to:
-generate equivalent fractions
-add fractions with like denominators
-place fractions on a number line
-compare fractions (greater than, less than, equal to)
-find the equivalent mixed number for an improper fraction and vice versa
-place decimals on a number line
-compare decimals (greater than, less than, equal to)

We will spend the week finishing up decimals and reviewing for the test.

Science
This week, we will wrap up our discussion on weather with a review of predicting the weather and the tools scientists use. Students will write their own weather report to share with the class.

Students have been recording the moon phases in their nightly calendar all month. This week, we are
finally going to spend some time talking about why we see different parts of the moon each night.
