Financial Literacy

Yesterday we had a guest speaker- Mr. Kohn!
He is a financial advisor with Modern Woodmen of America.

He talked with the students about the importance of saving for the future.
That led us to the question:
How can we prepare for our financial futures?

Today we discussed what might be in our financial futures. Here is a list of a few things we came up with.

Then we talked about ways to help us prepare for those expenditures.

The class decided that no matter what they do, they wanted to be sure and start a savings account to manage their money. Students can take the online quiz from Mr. Kohn and open a free savings account. Modern Woodmen will deposit $20 in their account every year until they are 18! We also encouraged students to open a savings account at their parent's banks. They set a goal of everyone having a savings account by next Thursday!

What are we going to do with these accounts once they are open?
Students picked large expenses they wanted to start saving for. Some of the things we picked are: college tuition, musical instruments, car, and a computer. For their project, they are going to create a financial plan to help them reach their goals! They will look at ways to earn money, how to manage their money, and how much money they will have to save each month to reach their goals. It will be a GREAT life lesson. I can't wait to see what they come up with!
