Weekly Update 10/26-30

Good Morning!
I hope everyone stayed safe in the rain this weekend. I hope it didn't dampen your plans too much.

Here is a look at our week:

Reading
We will look at ways authors organize information inside nonfiction text. The four most common organizational strategies are: cause and effect, description, sequencing, and compare and contrast. We will read several examples of nonfiction text and use text clues to determine the organizational strategy the author used.

Writing
Students struggled last week with their expository writing. We are going to spend this week reviewing strategies for generating quality writing ideas. We will also spend a lot of time modeling and practicing writing good supporting paragraphs. Today we practiced generating broad topics for supporting paragraphs. We listed everything we know about weather and boxed those ideas into broader topics. Here is a picture of our list. Students then started their own list. We will finish up tomorrow!

Math
Last week, we wrapped up our 2x2 multiplication and intro to division unit. Our new focus will be fractions. By the end of the unit, students will need to be able to: compare fractions, order fractions, add/subtract fractions with common denominators, convert mixed numbers to improper fractions (and the reverse), and most importantly, understand that fractions are part of a whole. For homework, students have two pages of spiral review.

Science
We are having so much fun watching the news everyday. It seems like we notice something new each morning. We will continue to track the weather over the week. We will be looking at how Hurricane Patricia picked up strength over the ocean, lost strength when it made land fall, and what will be left over when it makes it's way to Texas. As we track the weather, we will continue to learn about weather symbols and ways weather data is organized and presented. For science homework, students only need to practice their vocabulary words on Quizlet. I will be tracking their progress over the next two weeks. Don't forget to checkout all the awesome weather links we have on our science page.

Social Studies
We are going to learn more about the first Native Texan groups in Texas. Students will use their Texas Studies Weekly and online textbook to learn more.

Homework
I hope y'all are enjoying the new homework format. I hope it is providing more flexibility, time to complete work, and extra practice. Students can visit the Wordly Wise website for practice games for their vocabulary words. Please do not forget to sign your child's homework tracker when they complete their reading and timed math facts. You can find digital copies of the homework tracker and the math pages in our eBackpack.
