Weekly Update 2/8-12

Good Morning!

We have a few important dates this week: Tomorrow is picture day and Friday is our Valentines party. Click here to see our signup page. Please send all items to school the morning of our party. Thanks a bunch!

Finally, a BIG congratulations is due to Mr. Grubb, our new Teacher of the Year! Mr. Grubb is not only a wonderful teammate, but he is also a great friend. We couldn't be happier for him!

This is what we are going to learn about this week:

Reading
We are going to continue to use our well honed nonfiction text to learn about hunger. We decided it was our job, as Hunger Heroes, to be well informed so that we could advocate for those in our community knowledgeably. We will bring our nonfiction unit to a close next week.

Writing
This week, we will continue to look at editing and revising strategies. We will also move forward in our writing skills book. This week, we will also review using commas for interjections and appositives. That was one area the kiddos understood really well when we practice in our workbook, but struggled with using them correctly in our own writing.

Math
We have had so much fun creating origami and learning about geometry at the same time. This week, we will review 2D shapes, continue practicing measuring angles, and determine how to find the measurement of complimentary angles.

Science
In science, we are starting a new unit on ecosystems. We will start by reviewing producers and consumers. We will later take time to go on a nature walk and observe parts of our ecosystem on the playground. Students will also determine parts of a food chain, and how they are related to food webs. Check out our science page for lots of great practice games and vocabulary help.

Social Studies
Last week, we discussed how Stephen F. Austin was able to start such a successful colony. This week, we will talk about how those colonists begin to become unhappy with the new Mexican government.

Homework
We've got new homework this month. I think you will like it! I'll post a separate update on that later today. :)
