Weekly Update 2/16-19

Good Morning!

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend and Valentine's Day. It was absolutely gorgeous outside on Saturday! All of the teachers at Elsa England were hard at work on Monday polishing up our academic vocabulary development strategies, writing in science lessons, and strategies to help students with reading comprehension. It's always nice to have time to learn from, and work with, our peers.

Here is a look at our short week:

Reading
Today, the students are taking the 2015 released STAAR reading assessment. We will send home their scores in the next week. We will take time this week to check over commonly missed questions, helpful strategies, and ways to stay positive during a long testing day. You can find the released assessment online.

Writing
We are going to write a new expository piece this week. We will work through the writing process together as a class. Students will turn in a completed draft on Friday.

Math
We are going to continue to work on our geometry unit. We will review important vocabulary throughout the week. Please make sure students are practicing at home using our Quizlet link. Our geometry concepts are pretty easy but there is a big emphasis on vocabulary. Thank you!

Science
We are going to spend some time outside this week making observations about the ecosystem we live in. Students will learn about the parts of an ecosystem, food chains, and food webs. It should be a lot of fun!

Social Studies
The Anglo settlers are not happy in their new homes in Mexico. This week, we will discuss what happens when tensions arise.

Homework
Fourth grade is making modifications to our homework requirements. While many parents were ecstatic over our new homework selections, some parents wanted more structured assignments to prepare students for upcoming STAAR assessments. Students will read twenty minutes per school night, but no student will be required to log their reading. A handful of Math STAAR prep questions will be assigned daily and will be checked the next day in class. Any parents who wants additional extension activities should refer to our web site where many learning opportunities are available.
